Are we security guards as well???

Hi, Guys.
Lust week we find it out, that a panic button has been fitted in the reception.
So, if there is a problem, like intruders, gangs etc. It will send a signal to a mobile phone for help.
The only thing is that its been programmed to ring our phone, again no consultation about it with us.
I just really don't know where I and my mates are standing?! Are we sequrity now as well, without any training never mention extra pay for it!!! Our college in London, and here you just never know what could happen!!!
Any advice, please.
Thank you!

The short answer is "no". You are required to follow safe working practices. In the crisis situation that you suggest, the college should have lock down facilities in place. If you are to be involved, it would be on the basis of supporting the office staff in summoning assistance from the police. Caretakers & site staff are not bouncers. Very few of us have our SIA badges. It would be wise, maybe, to clarify your role in situations in which intruders get on site during the college day. If you are not happy with it, discuss the matter with your union H&S Rep with a view to making representations to management safety grounds.

I am surprised, a college normally has security staff in addition to those that do our type of role, more penny pinching no doubt. The very least they should offer you is some relevant training and a stab proof vest, provided you guys and your union agree to such a role.

We have one here but its connected to our security firm who on activation contact the police. We know this because one of our office staff accidently pressed it and 5 mins later they arrived mob handed wanting to know where the threat was. Was she red faced or what. [Happy.png] [Blush.png]

I know I would put myself in front of anyone trying to hurt pupils or staff here. But that is just me and the way I think.

I did that a few months into starting late one friday evening not knowing we had one fortunately our security firm rang us and could see on camera everything was ok so no police that time although we could not find a reset key for it for while
