Different names
Hi all,
I was speaking with a few contractors a few weeks ago and they mentioned something that has stuck with me. For context, where I work, we are 'Caretakers' or site team. One of those contractors mentioned that in many of the schools that they have been in, people don't like the term caretaker or that they even get offended by it. I know that in the States they use 'Custodian' or 'Janitor', I just wanted to know everyone's thoughts or if you know of anything similar. Sorry if this is in the wrong area.
Cheers.

Re: Different names
I remember a few years back our LEA changed our title from school caretaker to access controller, then site team or site manager was mentioned. Originally when I started in this job under the ILEA umbrella, we were all called schoolkeepers, in larger school’s there were also deputy schoolkeepers and assistant schoolkeepers.

Well bro., a janitor is the same as a "cleaner" and a custodian does some of that but also does maint. and other things.
Much like we would "caretaker" and "jack of all trades".

Re: Different names
Current names that I know of for the same role…
Caretaker
Assistant Caretaker
Facilities operative
Facilities supervisor
Facilities manager
Site Manager
Compliance officer.
In short, depending on the school, the trust, academy or council, the name changes but the job kind of remains the same.

Re: Different names
Just depends on the particular management of the day. The newer style school leaders like to make up lovely titles for jobs in their academies but the don't offer the wage to match the title, not just with caretakers by the way

Re: Different names
We are a site team!
I am the premises manager, my colleague is the caretaker.
If some one asks if i am the caretaker i just say yes.
Call me what you like, i get paid to get the job done. Title is largely irrelevant

I'm a site manager but they could call me Marvin the Martian for all I care, just as long as I get paid on time

Re: Different names
I have worked under the title Caretaker and Site Manager the role changed only over time not because of the title of the role and I personally have never taken offence to the title of Caretaker although Site Manager does have a better ring to it
