The British Institute of Cleaning Science

The British Institute of Cleaning Science, which has its headquarters in Northampton, is the largest professional and educational accreditation body within the cleaning industry.  Founded in 1961, its mission is ‘the raising of status and standards of the cleaning industry, through education’.

BICSc is an independent body with members in all areas of the cleaning industry, including local authorities, contract cleaners, facilities management, manufacturers, suppliers, trainers and by no means least, cleaning operatives themselves.

There is a nationwide regional structure whereby members, both individual and corporate, working through their own committees hold regular meetings on topics of mutual interest.

The Institute’s Membership Services, Training & Education and Finance & General Purpose Committee sets the standards and develop the skills programme necessary for the Institute’s range of cleaning qualifications.

To become an individual a cleaning qualification such as the Foundation Certificate, COPC, FPCC, HPCC, N/SVQ, City & Guilds 764 or other suitable recognised qualification or experience in the cleaning or allied industry is necessary.  All applications need to be supported by an existing BICSc member or relevant employer/company.

Companies wishing to join as Corporate Members are required to have been trading for at least one year, provide a sponsoring corporate member or client and give certain undertakings, which include conforming to the Institute’s Code of Practice.

Members enjoy a wide range of services including a Legal Helpline, Employment Advice, a special Insurance Scheme, access to a Health Insurance Scheme and discounts on a number of further services.  In addition to the above Corporate Members are eligible for discounts on training materials (other than certificates) and individual member subscriptions.  Corporate Members  are also listed on the Institute’s website, together with their logo.  The listing also includes a link to  their own website.  The Cleaning Industry Handbook, which is published annually in April, includes members’ listing as well as approved training centres. Corporate Members have the right to  use the BICSc logo on company stationery, within advertisements and in other ways subject to Head Office agreement.  They also elect three representatives to the Council of
BICSc for a three year term.

All applications are reviewed weekly by a panel to ensure their eligibility and that they are correctly graded.

The Institute holds a major ‘get together’ and this gathering includes the Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner.
