A large iron gate protected the entrance and this was locked by the caretaker each night and opened each morning. The whole school was heated by what today would be looked upon as an antiquated central heating system. It consisted of two very large-diameter water pipes running one above the other all around the school walls. These were connected at frequent intervals to large coiled cast iron radiators, which (if I remember correctly) were painted dark brown. The heat was provided by a large coke-fired boiler...
