Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

With all this doom and gloom going on around us I thought it would be nice looking back on the cool cars we have owned, and maybe the not so cool ones if you are courageous enough.

First of all, I’ve never owned any cool cars, came close a few times but I’ve mostly stuck to middle of the road type practical cars.

I was once offered a straight swap of a 1970 Ford Mustang fastback from a work colleague for my mundane Ford Escort, it was around 1974 at the time of petrol rationing, you were only allowed 4 gallons and that wouldn’t have gone very far in a V8 Mustang. I got a few insurance quotes but they wanted both legs and one arm so I decided against the swap. My father-in-law also bought a Daimler Double Six cheap around that time, now that was a lovely but thirsty car.

I owned a Trabant for a couple of months, what was I thinking? It was a smoky unreliable heap of rust that eventually got scrapped, now that car I rate as definitely uncool…

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

My first car was a Mk1 Honda Prelude, no tape deck, but it had a built in radio. And boy oh boy it went like poo of a stick. But it drank oil, about a ltr to every 100 miles.

Serveral cars later...

An Alfa Romeo 147, never had a jot of bother with it for 16 years, then it fell apart with rust, and was beyond economical repair.

Current car, which I love to bits and I think they're very cool is a Citroen DS3. First saw one when they came out and loved it. 5 years later (when the Alfa died) I still like them, so got one. It's the sports model so has all the bell and whistles BUT with the 1.2 engine so only £20 per year to tax and cheap as chips insurance (£167 fully comp per year)
N=R* x Fp x Ne x Fl x Fi x Fc x (1+Nr) x Fm x L
(If you and I were in the staffroom, it would be the only even prime number.)

Come the revolution, I won't be able to afford the petrol to get there.

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

Most extravagant car I've owned is what I have now- 17 reg Ford Kuga ST line. Picked it up as lockdown was being lifted last summer as Ford were doing very good deals at the time (still more than I've ever paid for a car though!!).

We decided with the little man on his way, my old 64' Focus was at the point of a major service, plus tyres, brakes, clutch was going again (was originally replaced under warranty), so time to change it.

We go to Cornwall a few times a year as well as Bristol to see my family (usually) so would be beneficial to have a "family" car. I wasn't willing to get a plodder so decided to go the ST route - lovely car in the way it drives and looks, as well as being practical for the baby, dog, and extra boot space for the longer journies.

Wife's now driving a new Fiesta (standard trim) which she changed around the same time as the deals were very good!

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

Not too sure about cars, loved my Moggy Minor, and regret selling the couple of Volvo 740s (not to bad to see the end of the fuel bills though)

The list of bikes though could go on...…

Yamaha XJ650 Turbo. Just couldn't afford to keep and run it at the time. Only 1000 imported into the country, but I was on the dole so it had to go -Disappointment.png-

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

Once had the offer of a Daimler Hearse that was being retired from active service.

I'd driven it many times at work and it was great motor with not too many miles on it, and it was a good asking price.

But 6 (yes 6) MPG meant I said a polite no. The stretch limo went for a respray and became a wedding car.

By far the coolest car I have owned was a Westfield SEi with a ford cross-flow bored to 1700cc. It was also the first car I actually bought myself, as my first car was given to me by my Dad.

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

I had a Capri 2.0Litre S. That was cool. I also had a TR7. That was great fun but needed constant attention. I currently have a 1976 Beetle and a Mercedes SLK as well as my everyday car. I love to buy Classic Car Weekly (I bought it this morning) and have a look through at what I might spend a "lump sum" on. I quite fancy an Austin Cambridge. I love Farina designed cars. For info, there is a classic car museum with a twist being opened in Derbyshire this year. They will be doing something called "Drive your dads car" So you might get to drive and old Vauxhall Viva, Hillman Minx, Zephyr Wolsley etc. I quite fancy that idea!

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

My first was probably the worst one if I am honest. A Reliant Robin, yep, a 3 wheeler. Loved it as I could drive it from 16 (as best I can recall), at least until I turned it over!
Probably my best, owned car was a Skoda Fabia, just after VW took them over, that was a superb car, right up until I put it under the back of a pickup flatbed turning across the road in front of me. Walked away from it with only a bruise or two from the seatbelt and it needed a new wing and bonnet and that was about it. It was SOLID!

The best cars I have driven include an MG B GT V8, Jaguar XJS and multiple Rolls Royce Silver Shadows. Used to work for a car dealer and I got the chance to go pick up new cars, including visiting Crewe to collect new Rollers. Poor paying job, but what perks!

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

Bought a 1968 Land Rover LWB many moons ago. Top speed of 50mph and 12 mpg. Froze to death in the winter as it hand no heating and the windows had bigger gaps than Watford! Great fun to drive though.

Definately miss my old Volvo estate though. Had a 240 estate in black and a 245 in Maroon. Lovely cars to drive but thirsty.

Some cool and iconic cars listed above -Like.png- the petrol head in me keeps looking at the 5 litre hand sanitizer thread and I’m thinking possibly small block V8 and wow that must be one powerful hand sanitizer... -Scared.png- -Big grin.png-

Re: Cool cars you’ve owned or nearly owned!

Started off with an Austin Maxi and a Vauxhall Chevette but moved onto a 1971 Ford Mustang Grande. I got that from my brother when he upgraded to a 1971 429ci Mustang super cobra jet with H20 injection and nitrous in the boot. It could only be driven in the dry as it just didn't adhere to the road. Since them I've had around 25 cars ranging from a Jag XJ40 to my current Smart car. Oh and I've loved all the mini's I've owned, I bitterly regret not buying the 6 wheel mini pickup I was offered some years ago -Cry.png-
