I mean apart from being an:

Electrician, Plumber, Maintenance Person, Painter and Decorator, Health and Safety Expert, Personnel & man management skills, negotiating and bargaining skills and a clairvoyant.

What attributes would you say are essential for being a caretaker in the 21st century?

As I once said to the best HT I ever worked for, a caretaker should be a cross between a barman, a priest & a psychologist.

See all, ear all and don't say a word to anyone, unless it's aimed at you!

To be a good listener and to be there when they need to confide in some one, i had many a staff member cry on my shoulders when it all got to much, the ability to adapt your self to any situation either leading from the front or as a team member, to be able to go that extra mile when needed and then some.
Think of yourself as the hub in the middle of a wheel and all the spokes radiate out to the different departments and people and jobs and you have to rotate and keep the spokes attached so the school keeps rotating as it should, you go wrong and most of but not all the school will go wrong. Flexible as all days go to pot. Time management skill and having the attitude to always put in a 110 % even though the money is rubbish and most of the time there's no thanks or appreciation.

I'm a caretaker. I solve problems you don't know you have in many ways you can't understand. [JawDropped.png]
