Ode to us the shoulders the Heroes stand upon....

Hi all, I thought I would introduce myself by sharing this poem I wrote mid last year...

Enjoy as its an accolade to us the invisablw heroes behind the visible ones 👍👍👍

When the world coughed....

In the beginning ...

How far away it seemed to us a virus in China,
The relevance to us then seeming trivial and minor.

How quickly our attention brought to the fore,
Once this “other world problem” arrived at our shore.

Yet still we sleepwalked, living our day to day,
“Its just like flu” thats what they say.

Slow to realise the situations full extent,
Slow to understand the viruses deadly intent,

And as it progressed without relent,
How petty it seems now the little asked of us, we were so ready to resent.

“Only the old” or “ already ill” rang out the cry of the ill-informed,
Until thousands of all ages sadly taken, how the reality has dawned.

Yet even now as the sun shines the public spaces fill,
With every selfish, self rationalising and
Ignorant imbecile!

When will they get it? When will they learn?
Maybe when its their loved ones the message will burn?

Prince Charles, our Boris no one is above,
This insidious invisible threat to all that we love.

Not just our loved ones at risk as lives it does take,
But our whole way of living as our reality it will remake.

Our materialistic and indulgent world will now stutter and falter,
No longer will we so wantonly worship at the capitalist alter.

The Heros of 2020 it will be heralded through the ages,
Were made up from the ranks of the minimum wages.

As all those who facilitate our empty consumer existance,
Were told to “work from home” and “socially distance”.

Corona this cruel leveller of everyones life station,
Re-writes the import of all in our fight for our salvation.

The NHS fighting weaponless in the front line,
Whilst Delivery drivers risk all to deliver on time.

The minds of tomorrow teachers new ways must reach,
For the lessons of humanities history now more than ever we must teach.

So The unsung keep the cogs turning with tasks from the heroic to mundane,
At all costs our society we strive to maintain.

From bin men to cleaners and the often unseen,
The good fight continues
Our greatest weapon those that clean.

And as panic ensues and the penny will now drop
Supermarket staff pick up the gauntlet as we hoard, panic buy and shop.

So now the once affluent now impotently stand in line,
At the command of trolley boys and checkout girls whose power is now Devine

On a quest for dried or tinned goods for which they will sell their soul,
Dignity forgotten as they fight over inexplicable amounts of toilet roll...

The lesson I hope that will be finally learnt,
Is that the rich, the famous and successful relied on the “little people” when their world got burnt.....

Remember well all of this once this has passed, as pass it assuredly will,
The value of those that counted when the world coughed, and we were made to stand still ......

I shouldn’t worry, sure it’s just a simple case of covering all bases. It is an open forum after all and better to be prepared!
