everyone around me seems to be able to get FF, but for some reason, I can`t (not that I want it, the 30Mbps I get is plenty for me) so don`t know what that will mean for me if/when they close my local exchange.

I find it incredible the amount of data that can be transmitted down a fibre cable. My son used to work for a communications company in a data centre, there were 2 fibre connections that supplied communications for the entire data centre. Both fibre connections were cryogenically cooled for obvious reasons, but they supplied throughput for the thousands of servers powering many thousands of websites and VoIP connections.
