Everyone has their tipping point. Despite what the "leaders" say, there is a distinct and increasing lack of empathy and care in schools, particularly to anyone outside of the teaching profession. So, more and more caretakers will hit theirs.

It's sad when another experienced caretaker leaves a role but if being your own boss is what makes you happy then go for it.
