Went to the dentist this morning

I lost a tooth. She also noticed one of my existing fillings was loose.

Was told I had 2 options regarding the missing tooth, forget it (leave it missing) or have a crown fitted. She did an xray and said she couldn't see the canal going all the way to the top of the root in the xray. She says if it is there, it will cost £280 for a crown. If the canal isn't there, I'd have to go to a specialist and have a hole drilled in it at a cost of £600-£800 plus her cost of £280.

My wife says she has had several crowns and also had them break. So I can't see the point of spending all that money on something that is prone to braking. Maybe you could share your experience if you have had crowns.

Was told to go down to reception and book an appointment for the filling (why dentists can't do it while I'm laying in front of her I don't know, they alway used to) and I'm to let her know about the crown when I have the filling done. Anyway, went down to reception... Are you free at 3pm this afternoon? Yes!!! So got to go back in 2 hours 30 mins time.

Lord I hate dentists. [Angry.png]

So, its leave a hole or pay for a crown. What do you think?

Re: Went to the dentist this morning

I have a couple of crowns, from when the maximum charge was £200 per course of treatment, now, a crown costs over that to replace one.
One of mine apparently required replacing, so he started that, two weeks before the first lockdown, and packed it with a temp plastic filling whist the new crown was made. Less than a week later it fell out, so I had to take it back the day lockdown hit. Whilst in the chair whilst he prepped my hole to put the plastic but back in, the lab where the crown was being made rang to say they had to close. So he filled it properly and then he too closed down for several months.

When they reopened, he called me in to try to fit the new crown and told me this was the third he was doing since reopening and both the previous ones did not fit. Mine did.

Me, I’d go for the replacement crown, but then again, I’m trying to avoid dentures for as long as I can. I had to help my parents with theirs towards rather end, and this turned my stomach hence my desire to retain my own teeth for as long as I can.

Thanks DR. I'm going to suggest if it is possible to have a crown, but if she finds the canal doesn't extend to the top of the root and she can't fit the pin, if I can just say forget it at that point. I can't afford £600-£800 for private specialist treatment. As it is, I'm going to have to ask the wife to fork out the £280. If the dentist isn't prepared to do that, I'll just have to live with a gap.

Re: Went to the dentist this morning

I had a crown for a front tooth (both actually) and one became infected so they took it out. £350 later and a denture sold to me. Always make me gag so gave up. Simply can't be bothered with it so big gap now. I'm "too long in the tooth (gap)" now to be bothered about how I look. As I say, apart from when I look in a mirror, I don't have to look at myself so no one to impress (married since 1987). Funny when kids say where is your tooth, I just tell them to look after theirs or they will not have them in the future.

Re: Went to the dentist this morning

Been getting a molar tooth filled several times over the last few years. Dentist said I need a crown fitted, he suggested a gold one as it wore down with the other teeth or a ceramic which doesn’t. Gold = £700 ceramic = £600

Re: Went to the dentist this morning

Might regret saying this but I had a crown years ago and no problems, also had a tooth taken out as they kept filling it and messing about with it and it was better out!

My back problem means that I can only sit in a dentist's chair for a short time - and then only in an emergency. A large yellow streak right down the middle.

Re: Went to the dentist this morning

Well, she went to remove the loose filling. She found that the nerve was dead. She placed a really cold probe on the tooth and I felt nothing.

She said she had to do a root canal filling and put a crown on the remaining tooth. After an hour and a half trying to open up the canal entrances (2 of them) she said they had calcified. She had the practice manager sit in, called a collogue to assist (but as she was already seeing the patients she had mounting up, didn't actually get to help). Eventually, she did exactly what she said she couldn't do. She said she needed to open up the root canal, clean it and fill it with a special fillers. If she didn't do this and just put a filling on the tooth, she said it would trap bacteria and cause issues at a later date. She gave up trying and put a filling on it.

The fact that this tooth had calcified, made me think I'm not going to look at a crown for the missing tooth as that is likely to be calcified as well.

Just got home 1 and 3/4 hours with my head upside down. So please I'm home.

I might start looking for a different dentist. I'm not convinced the new people who have taken over this practice know what they are doing. I think my mouth was better off before seeing the dentist. [Angry.png]
