No googling, as ever. Though I know that you would not resort to it

What is the non-baseball connection between GH Ruth & Camden Yards? No points for suggesting that Babe started his career with the Os.

Actually he did start with the O's.
He was born and lived his early days in a home about 3 blocks away from what is now the yard. It has been turned into a museum and I've been there a few times.

I just had a few minutes and looked it up.
https://baberuthmuseum.org/

About half a block away there is an excellant cafe that serves really good crab cake sandwiches. My baseball sidekick and I went there inbetween games on a double header. The visit to the museum was when we went early to an afternoon game to see the house before the game.

Correct.

Another bit of baseball history. What were the Terrapins - and why did they die out? And why did the supposedly influential Federal League fail?

You confused me on this one bro.
Terripins are the name of any sports team from the university of maryland.
I think you might be thinking about the Baltimore Terripins, a team in 1912 or 15?
They were in the Federal League which tried to become another baseball league around that time. They were pushed out by the National League and American League, oh, no monopoly there. [Shock.png]
On a side note, I was born in Maryland and remember watching the sports news and Vince Bagley reporting on the Terps and having to saying which sport it was. He was very cool, not a presenter/reporter but he would always give his opinion. Ihave many books on baseball and the O's because of where I grew up. And NO, I have never googled (I never use google as I dispise ther spying methods) any answer If I can't remember I go the my books.
If you want some good BBQ resipies I have a book from John "Boog" Powell a great player and now runs Boogs BBQ's on Eutaw street in the yard. Met him a number of time, good solid dude.

Whenever I here baseball mentioned I think of the above clip.
At primary school in the late 70's we had a Canadian teacher that introduced us to softball.

That is the one I was thinking of. Been reading about Babe Ruth & baseball in the 1920s. How the game has changed. Cannot think that the Babe`s excessive behaviour would be tolerated today, even with his prodigious talents.

BTW, do you share the view that Ruth could have made it as a pitcher as well as a batter?

If he was in the National league then yes, but he was in the American league. The difference is that the NL pitchers bat where in the AL they don't, you have a DH (designated Hitter) to get up there and whomp the ball. He would never be in the HOF (Hall of Fame) on his pitching alone.
At his museum they had a display with bats from a few HOFers and you could reach in and hold/lift their bats. Ruth's bat was heavy, I think 38oz, while Eddie Murray's was a little lighter, 36oz I think. I think it was a dream to hold the same bat as these HOFers. I also saw his original comtract with the O's, jees these guys were paid peanuts compaired to today.

Not sure how they pay those telephone number salaries these days. It is not that common to see a baseball stadium packed out. I think the ticket money is considerably less than for the football games too. Or am I wrong on that? You cannot but wonder how elite sport in the US is bankrolled.

Well, it's mostly advertising and sponsorship.
And a good splash is the prices at the game. Expect to pay about $40.00 for a good seat and $10 for the high up nose bleed seats. Home plate and duggout seatig can go as high as $60.00 per seat. Don't get me wrong, you can (at the yard) get in in SRO for $8.00.
And the consessions are about tripple the price of a normal restaraunt.
Going to a pro game can cost aroound $100.00 and up, that's why I go to a lot of minor league games. You see the upcoming players, see the game and have a good time. Cost is around $50.00. When I go back I always catch a game at the yard but I always catch 3 or 4 games in the minors.
