Guide to Clean Air Zones

You might live in one, you've probably heard of them and if you haven't yet you will soon. Let's take a look at Clean Air Zones in the UK. As part of the Government’s long term strategy to improve air quality, clean air zones are being introduced across the country. By discouraging the use of older, more polluting vehicles, clean air zones reduce the number of areas in the UK where air pollution breaches legal limits.

Cities that currently have Clean Air Zones include Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Tyneside and Greater Manchester.

I was quite surprised/shocked to see that my 2010 Kia is compliant with the new one near Bristol Air Port.

By paying to drive in the zone with your non compliant vehicle, does that somehow make it non polluting,
as Nail says it is a tax on people who cannot afford a newer car.

And don't get me started on Sadiq Khan's planned ULEZ extension that will affect colleagues who have older cars, but it was fine for the new years eve fireworks to pump toxic metals into the air.

I tend to agree with you, I doubt the fees will discourage many non compliant vehicle to keep out of these Clean Air Zones.

I think the reason for these measures has more to do with the Court of Justice of the European Union which ruled that the UK had broken the law by “systematically and persistently” exceeded legal limits for dangerous nitrogen dioxide (NO2) since 2010, and has failed against its legal duties to put plans in place to tackle the problem in the shortest possible time.

This could see the UK facing massive fines if it still fails to take action.

More a knee jerk reaction by the government than a well thought out plan.

Re: Guide to Clean Air Zones

I live within the ULEZ zone and regularly see many older vehicles that cannot possibly meet the ULEZ criteria driving around. Surely the owners are not paying the £12.50p daily charge?

I know the criminal element clone number plates as a friend had his plate cloned, he started getting speeding and parking fines through the post. He bought private plates in the end to stop it.

I completely agree, this is nothing more than robbing the poor to allow the rich to do as they please.

The real message coming through here is that the government could not give a monkeys about pollution levels but it would like to see the streets emptied so that the rich can blast around in their polluting cars happily paying the charges out of their pocket change, or just go out and lease the latest electric super car because they can afford to.

Its just another way to control the masses, If they really wanted to control pollution in cities then cheap effective public transport is what is required. No one should be able to bypass the pollution controls simply because they can afford to pay for it.
