Leaving a residential job

Hi all,

I've been offered quite a good job by a friend who runs his own business. I have pretty much made my mind up to go for it, but I have been a residential caretaker at various schools for over ten years now and am a bit anxious about going back to normal renting of a house of my own choosing.

Has anyone else left a residential job? How did you get on? Glad you made the move? Or do you miss living on site?

Any experiences/advice would be appreciated.

Re: Leaving a residential job

When I was made redundant (out of the blue) our lovely BM (I hope you picked up on the sarcasm [Angry.png] )gave me 30 days to find a house and leave.

This was during covid.
I’d been off for 4 month due to severe depression.
So with his wonderful leadership, I was back on the sick.

My fantastic partner spent a lot of hours on the phone to our local county housing, as I was next to useless.

Got sorted at the 11th hours (and 58 minutes [JawDropped.png] ) so I now live in a smashing council house in a really nice area.

Landed on my feet and got a great job 5 minutes down the road, and absolutely love life now.

Able to go home and properly switch off, bliss.

Re: Leaving a residential job

Also to add…

If you are made redundant etc your county may help you but they’re not obligated.

If you left the job for a better one and the like you’re on your own and good luck with that.

And ElGuapo, yup it was a rough few months, but with hind sight all is good now.

Surley 30 days isnt enough...

May i ask, could you have fought it furtehr , had you not found a place? what would have happenend had you just stayed longer? WHat did the union advise?
I only ask, as aim liklikey to be in the same situation soon and have no idea what to do....ther are 6 of us living iin the house, me , my wife, two adult children and two children under 16.
Iam scraed out of my mind on how to cope...the house has been my home for over 20 years. I have worked at the school for 24.

Re: Leaving a residential job

I managed to do it in 28 days 😁

Yes I could have fought it, but at the time and suffering from depression etc I just didn’t have the energy.

My plan was if I was unable to get a house was to sit tight, and not to move.

A conversation I had with the BM was “If you think I’m shifting out into a one bed 🤬hole you’ve got another thing 🤬 coming”.

I also mentioned I’d go to the press.

It’s a pants time bud, but get yourself on the housing list, and if/when given an eviction date, start phoning the housing people daily if need be. (Nobody will help until you get your eviction letter.). Try not to stress, easier said than done.
