I've been a big advocate of no appraisal for a while.....certainly for some.

For me, I don't need targets setting to do my job.

The 'appraisal' for me and my team (and I think for a lot of support staff) should be more of a job chat. A formalised point to stop and have a check in. What do you want to start, stop, carry on? I'm very clear with my team that it's a chance to discuss things out in the open but there's no guarantee anything will change - at least they know I know now.
