Holiday when to take it?

I am contracted full time as a caretaker at a small primary school. Am currently only allowed to take time off during half term and summer term. Which for the most part is not a problem other that I am no longer tied to school breaks any more.

That said maintenance still needs to be done and booked in.

Would I be wrong in asking for a number of days off during term time?

Given my Head can take off when ever they want [Thumb_up.png]

I’m in a similar situation. I can take up to half annual leave during term time

Re: Holiday when to take it?

Fortunately I’m able to take my annual leave either term time or holidays. We are a large primary but the question was raised some years back when in mid March time I still had 3+ weeks of leave to take before 1st April.
It was decided that as holidays are the busiest time for planned works it’s not always feasible to be away, So now it’s pretty much whenever I like.
It’s worth the conversation to explain and see what’s possible. If it’s an outright no be sure to book every day you are entitled too despite what’s going on.

I’m in the same boat. Was told this week that as I’ve still got 18.5 days holiday this year to fit in before the end of March (my holidays are 1st April to 31 March), do I want to carry them over? Having seen what major works are planned in, as well as routine maint/servicings, plus if we’re successful on CIF bids, I said there’s not much point as I’ll be in the same boat at the end of next year. Now looking at being paid for those not taken, and a rewrite of contract regarding my holidays for the future

Re: Holiday when to take it?

It comes down to your contract of employment and what it states. Mine for instance states that holidays are to be taken in non term time. There have been a couple of instances where a day is in term time but only when unavoidable.

When I took the job my wife was a teacher but has since retired so it is only now I feel the restrictions and increased cost. But I make the most of my allocation and plan around Bank Holidays and those weeks without I can push my hours into 4 days and take whichever day of the week I choose off.

Re: Holiday when to take it?

Taking my annual leave was always a problem in my school, there always seemed to be necessary maintenance work required during every school holiday. Although during a family tragedy the SMT were sympathetic to my requests for time off during term time. Time off in Liew from callouts or other emergencies also added to the problem. I was allowed to carry over 5 days from the previous years A/L but this also added to the problem.

Re: Holiday when to take it?

Been a thorn in my side for many years,
They say that I have to take holidays during non term time but at the same time want me to supervise more and more contractors during the holidays..

I now have a whole bunch of holidays that need to be used before September but only really the summer holidays to take them (easter and whit already booked to use some holidays), next will be this and that and all these jobs need doing in the summer... [Mad.png]

Re: Holiday when to take it?

you can ask for whatever you like.

You may be surprised how open some HTs are to alternative arrangements.
